The Evolution of the Old Fort Gateway Trail System
The Old Fort Gateway Trail System represents a transformative milestone for outdoor recreation in Western North Carolina. The trail network is the result of a collaborative partnership between the U.S. Forest Service, the non-profit Camp Grier, and local communities, operating together as the G5 Trail Collective. Developed to expand sustainable trail infrastructure, the project balances community economic growth with accessible conservation, positioning Old Fort as a premier destination for mountain biking, hiking, and trail running.
Current Mileage and Planned Expansion
The network currently features 14 completed miles of trails offering terrain tailored to multiple skill levels, from beginners to advanced riders. Built to provide a riding style unique to the region, the system is designed as a stacked loop system that offers easy, flowing terrain—a characteristic that is rare among the traditionally steep and rugged topography of Western North Carolina.
This current 14-mile footprint marks the completion of the initial phases of a larger infrastructure project that is actively expanding toward a final goal of 42 total miles of trail.
Accessibility and Regional Connections
The Gateway Trail System is highly accessible, featuring two dedicated parking areas for visitors entering the network. Strategically located within the Pisgah National Forest, these trails connect directly to the nearby Curtis Creek Area, which hosts additional recreation assets like the Curtis Creek Campground and the advanced Snook’s Nose single-track trail. This direct connectivity allows trail users to seamlessly scale up their adventures, transitioning from the smooth, beginner-friendly loops of the Gateway network into the more technical, backcountry terrain of the surrounding national forest.
Parking:
Main Gateway Trailhead (Meadows Parking): Located at 1500 Curtis Creek Road (State Road 1227). From downtown Old Fort, take US-70 E, turn left on Curtis Creek Road, and drive 1.5 miles to the lot on your left. This expansive lot fits up to 100 vehicles and includes accessible restrooms, picnic tables, and bear-proof trash cans.
Allison Trailhead (Camp Grier): Located off Old US 70, this alternate parking area accesses the Gateway loop via the Rostan Trail. However, access through Camp Grier is not allowed Memorial Day – Labor Day.
Alternate Gateway Parking: Positioned just before the original entrance to the trails, it serves as an overflow lot for the system
