Old Fort sits at the foot of Pisgah National Forest, surrounded by rugged mountains, rushing streams, and miles of public land. Outdoor recreation has always been part of the area’s identity, but over the last several years local leaders, nonprofits, businesses, and trail advocates have worked together to build a destination centered around outdoor experiences.
Visitors can access some of Western North Carolina’s most scenic landscapes within minutes of downtown, including the popular Point Lookout Trail, the expanding Fonta Flora State Trail corridor, and the iconic Catawba Falls.
The Rise of Old Fort’s Trail Network
A major catalyst for Old Fort’s growth has been the development of new trail systems designed for hikers, runners, and mountain bikers.
The G5 Trail Collective, led by Camp Grier in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and numerous community organizations, has helped create and improve miles of multi-use trails surrounding the town. These trails have attracted outdoor enthusiasts from across the Southeast and have helped establish Old Fort as a destination for mountain biking and trail-based recreation.
The area’s distinctive red clay soils, varied terrain, and long riding season have earned praise from cyclists who view Old Fort as one of the most exciting emerging riding destinations in the region.
New Businesses Followed the Trails
As more visitors began exploring the trails, new businesses followed.
Local leaders have often pointed to a connection between trail development and economic growth. As new trail segments opened, entrepreneurs invested in restaurants, lodging, outdoor services, and recreation-focused businesses that serve both residents and visitors.
One of the newest additions is Foothills Watershed, a 117-acre outdoor recreation destination along the Catawba River that combines mountain biking, river access, dining, and family-friendly gathering spaces. Located just minutes from downtown Old Fort, the venue offers visitors a unique way to experience the area’s outdoor lifestyle.
The opening of Euda Wine has further expanded downtown’s appeal, giving visitors another reason to linger after a day on the trails.
Catawba Falls Continues to Draw Visitors
Few attractions have contributed more to Old Fort’s visibility than Catawba Falls.
The waterfall, one of the most visited natural attractions in Western North Carolina, sits just outside town and serves as the headwaters of the Catawba River. Recent trail improvements and expanded access have helped make the area even more attractive to hikers and families seeking a memorable outdoor experience.
For many visitors, a trip to Catawba Falls is their first introduction to Old Fort—and increasingly, it is only the beginning of their visit.
Resilience After Hurricane Helene
In September 2024, Hurricane Helene brought devastating flooding and landslides to Western North Carolina, including Old Fort. Trails, businesses, parks, and infrastructure suffered significant damage.
Yet the community’s response reflected the same determination that has fueled Old Fort’s transformation. Volunteers, business owners, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies worked together to reopen trails, restore businesses, and welcome visitors back to the area. By 2025 and 2026, many trails had reopened, businesses were operating again, and new investments continued moving forward.
The recovery effort reinforced something residents already knew: Old Fort’s greatest strength is its community.
Why Visitors Are Choosing Old Fort
Travelers looking for a mountain getaway increasingly appreciate what makes Old Fort different.
Unlike larger tourism destinations, Old Fort offers easy access to world-class outdoor recreation without the crowds. Visitors can spend the morning hiking to a waterfall, the afternoon riding trails, and the evening enjoying local food, drinks, and live music—all within a few miles of downtown.
With continued trail development, new businesses, and a growing reputation throughout the outdoor recreation community, Old Fort is no longer just a stop on the way to the mountains.
